45 cattle succumb to lumpy skin

Sunday, 16 February 2014 00:00 View Comments Faith MhanduAt least 45 cattle succumbed to lumpy skin disease in January with Masvingo province being the worst affected, the Veterinary Services Department has disclosed.




Lumpy skin disease is a viral disease spread by insects and it causes nodular skin wounds.


 


Veterinary Services Department director Dr Josphat Nyika said the disease has spread throughout the country with 1 747 new cases being reported last month alone.


 


“During the month of January alone we recorded 45 deaths of cattle affected by lumpy skin disease with 1 747 new cases of infected cattle being reported,” he said.


 


“Masvingo province is the most affected with 644 cases and 27 deaths while Mashonaland West has 344 cases with no deaths.  The other seriously affected province is Matabeleland South with 328 cases and eight deaths while Midlands has recorded 225 cases and seven deaths.”
