IFP Supports VAT Hike, but Calls for Temporary Relief - iAfrica

IFP Supports VAT Hike, but Calls for Temporary Relief - iAfrica
IFP Supports VAT Hike, but Calls for Temporary ReliefApril 7, 2025April 7, 2025NEWS, SOUTH AFRICA1 min readIn a recent media briefing, the Inkatha Freedom Party (IFP) expressed cautious support for the recent VAT increase, but with a key condition—it must be temporary. This comes after the party’s approval of the measure during last week’s parliamentary vote, as part of the Government of National Unity (GNU).

IFP president Velenkosini Hlabisa acknowledged the tough decision, recognizing the significant impact it will have on South Africans. He emphasized that, despite being part of the GNU, the IFP maintains its independence on key issues. Although the party initially opposed a 2% VAT hike, they now back the revised increase as a necessary step for economic stability.

Hlabisa argued that the VAT increase is essential to address the government’s dire financial situation and secure funding for vital social programs. Yet, he stressed that this measure should not be a permanent fix. “It must be lifted as soon as more sustainable sources of income are found,” he said.

The IFP’s stance raises an important question—how can South Africa balance short-term fiscal needs with long-term economic sustainability?
