AfriForum’s neighbourhood team removes trees from the road With the help of AfriForum’s emergency fund and in cooperation with Kaapse Forum, the George branch provided approximately R50 000 worth of food to around 1 000 children in the Blanco area of George. These children were temporarily displaced from, among others, residences and places of safety after the storms struck the area and disrupted the electricity supply. AfriForum’s emergency fund is specifically used to support communities during times of crisis.
“Projects such as these are only made possible through donations from the community. Every contribution enables AfriForum to undertake even more projects that make a tangible difference in the lives of disaster victims,” says Marthinus Erasmus, AfriForum’s District Coordinator for the Southern Cape.
AfriForum’s Knysna neighbourhood watch team cut up and removed fallen trees from roads in Rexford and Simola in Knysna, as well as in Sedgefield. At the request of the Garden Route District Municipality, the neighbourhood watch team also assisted in George by removing trees in the areas of Geelhoutboom, Heather Park, Heatherlands and Bodorp.
“AfriForum will continue working to strengthen communities against the impact of devastating disasters. We therefore encourage the public to get involved with AfriForum or to donate to the emergency fund so that we can help the next community in need,” Erasmus concludes.
AfriForum’s emergency fund enables the civil rights organisation to respond immediately and effectively when communities are struck by disasters such as veld fires or floods. Unlike the government, which often fails to make disaster relief funds available timeously and transparently, AfriForum ensures that every cent is used responsibly and effectively where it is needed most.
