The Congolese Under-17 are no pushovers having won the bronze medal at the African Youth Champi­onships last year and the local boys will need to be at their best to see them off after suffering a 1-2 defeat in the first leg at Rufaro.


 


The return match was moved by the Confederation of African Football (Caf) to next weekend at the behest of Zifa who had raised reservations on sending a second string side as most of the first team players were writing their ordinary level exams. Zimbabwe Junior Football League chairman Zivanai Chiyangwa con­firmed the commencing of camp yes­terday adding that the team was confi­dent of posting an away upset and progress.


 


“The boys are getting into camp today and the coaches have called in 30 players in a bid to come up with the best possible side and I am happy because for the past two weeks we have been training in two batches, with those from the southern part of the country work­ing with Agent Sawu while those from the Northern region have been working with coach Lloyd (Chigowe). “The boys depart for Congo on Thursday in the afternoon and from what I have seen over the past two weeks, I think the boys will be able to sail through,” added Man Zifa, as Chiyangwa is popularly known.


 


The teenagers played several friendly matches against senior teams such as Premiership side Harare City and lower division side Startrack in a move their experienced mentor Chigowe said was aimed at exposing the players to oppo­nents with the same physique as Congo.Chiyangwa, meanwhile, revealed to The Sunday Mail that Caf had advised them to lodge their request to have an independent MRI bone test carried out to determine the correct age of the Con­golese players,


whom they believe are over-aged, before the next match as required by laid down procedure.


 


Chiyangwa appealed to the corporate world to come on board and assist the youngsters financially as they are the future of the nationalside. “We call upon all companies to come on board and financially assist these youngsters.


 


“Unlike senior players who prioritise monetary reward, we would greatly appreciate even if they can chip in with goodies and or foodstuffs for camp,” he said.
